Well don to Cosmas DeBurca who ran an excellent PB of 2.48 and to John O'Callaghan who ran 3.15 in the Dublin City Marathon

St. Finbarrs held their annual half-marathon in Blarney on Sunday 13 of September. Conditions were warm in a race which was won in 70:40 by Sandis BRALITIS. Rising Sun had 5 athletes competing. Cosmas DeBurca had an excellent run to finish 9th in a time of 76:05. George Waugh finished in 83:36, Stephen Murphy (O50) in 98:08, Michael Kiely (1st O60) in 98:47 and Jim Murray (O60) in 111:53.

Rising Sun had 7 athletes competing in Ballycotton 5 held on 27th of August. This was the final race in the series and was again won by Sean McGrath. There was a record entry of over 500 runners. Cosmas DE BURCA finished 12th in 25:55, George Waugh 15th in 28:04, Eamonn O'Donovan 22nd in 28:47, John O'Callaghan (O45) finished in 31:49, John O'Driscoll (O50) 31:57, John O'Riordan (O55) 33:27 and Eddie Mullane 1st O65 in 33:33.

Rising Sun athletes Con O'Donovan, Brendan and Donnacha Dennehy, Sean O'Sullivan, Michael O' Herlihy, Donal and Denis Howard competed in The Woodie's DIY Masters Championships of Ireland on 16th August 2009 in Tullamore. We had a very sucessful day out bringing home 8 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze medals.

The Goleen & District Community Council ROUTE2CROOK '5' was held on Sunday 9 August 2009. The race was won by Kevin Wilmott, Bandon AC in a time of 27:55. Cosmas DeBurca finished a very close second in 28:09. John O'Callaghan(O45) finished in 32:20, John O'Driscoll in 32:51 and George Webb in 41:44. There was a total of 129 finishers.

The Shanagarry Festival 5km road race was held on Thursday 6th August 2009. A total of 92 athletes competed in this event. James MCCARTHY, East Cork AC won a very close race from clubmate Sean MCGRATH in a time of 15:25. John O'Callaghan finished 16th in a time of 18:56.

The Annual Kinsale Regatta 5 Mile Road Race was held on Friday July 31st. The race with a total of 188 athletes was won by Cathal O'Connell, St Finbarrs in a time of 26:09. Cosmos De Burca finished 6th in 27.02, followed by George Waugh, 7th in 27.10. John O'Callaghan ran 30.57 , John O'Driscoll, 31.24 (2nd O/50) and George Webb, 40.51

Rising Sun athletes had a very sucessful day at the Munster Masters T&F on Sunday 26th of July in Castleisland. We won a total of 20 golds, plus many silver and bronze medals. Rising Sun results

Cosmas DeBurca finished 5th in 57:36 in the Ballynonty 10 on Sunday 26th of July. He was followed in 6th place by George Waugh in 60:22. The race was won by Sergio Ciabonu Clonliffe Hariers in 51:27.

Churchtown South 5 Mile was held on Thursday 23rd of July with a record field of 473 athletes. The winner was Sean McGrath in a time of 26:21. First home for Rising Sun was George Waugh in 28:16, followed by Eamonn O'Donovan in 29:11, John O'Callaghan in 30:18, John O'Callaghan (O45) in 31:42, John O'Driscoll (O50) in 32:36, John O'Riordan (2nd O55) in 33:03 and Eddie Mullane ( 2nd O60) in 33:40

Banteer 5k was held on Sunday 19th of July. The race was organised by Duhallow AC and attracted 59 competitors. First home was Gavin Sweeney in a time of 15:53. First Rising Sun athlete was John O'Callaghan in 18:19, followed by John O'Riordan in 19:29 and Jim Murray (1st O60) in 21:56.


DONOUGHMORE '7' was held on Friday 17 July 2009. A field of 290 athletes took part. The winner was Colin Merrit in a time of 37:47. Cosmos DeBurca finished 8th overall in a time of 40:40. Next was John O'Driscoll in 47:18, Eddie Mullane (1st O60) in 47:28, Stephen Murphy in 48:45, Michael Kiely in 51:01,Jim Murray in 54:20 and Ann Murphy in 83:12. The COURTMACSHERRY '10K' was held on Saturday 27 June 2009. There was a total of 199 finishers. The winner was Kevin WILMOT, Bandon AC in 34:51. Cosmas DeBurca finished 3rd in 35:24 followed by George Waugh in 4th in a time of 35:31. John O'CALLAGHAN (O45)was 17th in 40:20 and John O'Driscoll(O50) 19th in 40:45.

Rising Sun had 8 athletes competing in the Shanagarry 5 on Thursday 25th of June. There was a record entry of 471 athletes, with local man Sean McGrath winning in 26:29. George WAUGH finished 10th in 27:54, Cosmas DeBurca 18th in 28:42, Eamonn O'DONOVAN finished in 29:43, John O'CALLAGHAN ran 31:12, John O'CALLAGHAN (O45) ran in 32:17, Eddie MULLANE (1st O60) in 32:41, John O'Driscoll (O50) in 32:56 and John O'Riordan (O55) in 33:59.

Congratulations to Cosmas De Burca who finished 16th overall in the Cork City Marathon in a personal pb of 2:59:05. The race was run in extremely hot conditions and was won by Michael Herilihy in 2:30:34.

Rising Sun had 7 athletes competing in the Ballyandreen 5 on Thursday 28th of May. There was a record entry of 411 athletes, with local man Sean McGrath wining in 26:08. George WAUGH finished 5th in 28:00, Eamonn O'DONOVAN 9th in 28:26, John O'CALLAGHAN (O45) 47th in 31:49, John O'CALLAGHAN 49th in 31:55, Eddie MULLANE (1st O60) 80th in 33:39, John O'RIORDAN (O55) 88th in 33:51 and John O'Driscoll (O50) 95th in 34:08.

The EMER CASEY MEMORIAL '10K' was held on Sunday 25th of May in Youghal. The race was wom by Sergiu CIOBANU, Clonliffe Harriers in 30:13. A total of 363 competed the race. John O'Callaghan finished well up in 32nd position in a time of 39:18.

Nine Rising Sun athletes competed in the Cheetah Run organized by Eagle AC on Thursdat 21 of May in Fota wildlife park. George Waugh finished 5th in in 21:58 followed by Cosmas DeBurca in 22:02. Eamonn O'Donovan finished 14th in 22:40. John O'Callaghan ran 25:24, followed by John O'Driscoll in 26:47 and Eddie Mullane in 26:48 (1st O 60). Stephen Murphy finished in 27:31 followed by Mary HISTON DEBARRA in 29:10 and George Webb in 33:36. There was 662 finishers in the race which was won by James Grufferty in 21:04. In the recent John Treacy 10 mile classic both George Waugh and Cosmas DeBurca had excellant runs finishing in under 60 minutes.


The Annual Rising Sun Straight Mile was held on Sunday the 17th of May. We had a total of 63 competitors. The weather was a bit wet during the race but not as bad as earlier in the day. However the runners had to cope with a fairly strong headwind. Ed Murphy Gneeveguilla was a comfortable winner in 4:38. In the Ladies section Ann-Marie Healy was first home in 5:34. Gerry Forde was 1st wheelchair in a time of 9:09

All entries and donations received will go to the Lavanagh Centre. To date a total of Euro 730 has been raised.
Mile Results

Rising Sun had a very successful day at the County Senior, Masters and Junior Championships which were held at the CIT track on Sunday May 10th. The club won almost 80 medals on the day.

At the Castlemartyr 4 mile road race held on April 16th 2009 Jim Murray won the mens O 60 section. Jim followed this up with a second in the Midleton 5 mile race.

The County Novice & Masters Road Championships were held in Carrignavar last Sunday. The race was held over a hilly course in windy conditions. Rising Sun had a very good performance in the Men's Novice finishing a close 2nd to Leevale in the team competition. George Waugh was 3rd indivdual and he was followed by Cosmas DeBurca, Eamonn O'Donovan, John O'Callaghan, Donal Vaughan and Stephen Murphy. In the Men's O50 Rising Sun finished 3rd team. The team was John O'Riordan (2nd O55), John Leahy, Jimmy Murray (1st O60) and George Webb.(2nd O65)
In the womens race Mary Histon DE Barra finished 6th in the Ladies O35 race.

Rising Sun AC 5th Annual Paddy Desmond Memorial Road Race was held on Tuesday March 17th at 11 AM in Ballinhassig Co. Cork. A record entry of 194 athletes took part. The race was held in very pleasent weather conditions with a light cooling east wind. First athlete home was Wieslaw SOSNOWSKI, Eagle AC in 21:03. This was a new course record beating the time of 21:10 set by Alan O'Shea two years ago. First lady was Helen LEONARD, Rathfarnham-WSAF AC in 25:24. First wheelchair athlete was Jerry Forde, Blarney-Inniscarra AC in 44:01


A special thanks to all who helped out on the day. Thanks once again to John Walshe for taking entries and producing the results. We are grateful to the patrons of the Marion Hall for the use of their facilities.
Provisional Results


The Ballycotton 10 Mile Road Race was held on 8th March 2009 in very cold windy conditions. The race was won by favourite Vinny Mulvey, Raheny Shamrock AC in 00:49:05. Rising Sun athletes again had some very good performances with Cosmos DE BURCA finishing 41st in 56:41, George WAUGH 45th in 57:18, John O'CALLAGHAN 181st in 01:03:46, Donal VAUGHAN 419th in 01:08:08, John O'RIORDAN 474th in 01:10:32, Stephen MURPHY 513th in 01:10:58, John O'DRISCOLL 542nd in 01:11:48, Eddie MULLANE 638th in 01:12:50, Jimmy MURRAY 1075th in 01:18:34, George WEBB 1451st in 01:24:32 and Ann MURPHY, 2375th in 01:57:07.
