Rising Sun Athletes had another very sucessful outing at the second leg of the County Masters& Novice T&F championships at the CIT track on Friday 27th of June. Well done to all who competed so well. It was good to see our ladies having a team in relay for the first time in many years.

Congratulations to Jim Murray on being honored for for 40 years dedicated service to athletics at National and local level. In recent years Jim has also been an active volunteer with the Special Olympics. He was presented with a piece of Cork Crystal by the City of Cork VEC at St. John's College. Three others were also honored for different sports at the same cermony.

Rising Sun had another very successful outing at the National Masters T&F Championships on Sunday 13th of August. Brendan Dennehy won gold in the 100m, 200m, high and long jumps. Con Donovan won gold in the 200m, long jump, silver in 100m and bronze in the javelin. Sean O'Sullivan had wins in the 100, 200,400 and long jump. Denis Howard had wins in the shot, discus,hammer, 56lbs for distance. Jim Murray silver in the 400 and 800m. Donal Vaughan won bronze in the 400m as did Don Desmond in the 1500m. John O'Riordan finished 2nd and 3rd in the 400 and 800m.

Rising Sun had another very successful outing at the County Novice & Masters at The CIT track on May 19th. This followed on from the recent good showing in the first leg on May 5th. Please go to results page for results of these meetings.



The Munster Masters Track& Field championships were held on Sunday May 28th in Castleisland, Co Kerry.

Rising Sun AC Straight Road Mile was held on Friday 12th of May at Lisfihill Road Ballinhassig. Conditions were perfect as it was warm with a light headwind. David Doherty Togher AC had a comfortable win in a new course record of 4.21 from James McCarthy East Cork and Brian Kirwan St.Laurance O'Toole. In the Ladies race Hillary McGee, Lucan won easily from Lisa Copithorne. Hillary was also the winner of the recent Paddy Desmond Memorial 5K Road Race.

Euro 550.00 was collected in entries and donations. All of this money will go to the Lavanagh centre.

Tom Laffan, Bandon, won a very close finish from Ken Mulcahy in the Paddy Desmond Memorial 5K Road Race promoted by Rising Sun AC On St. Patrick'Day. Only 2 seconds separated the athletes at the finish. In the womens race Hilary McGee had a comfortable win over Edel Kelleher. Gerry Forde was the winner in the wheelchair section.

January 14. All Ireland Masters Indoors, Nenagh.

The following are the results of Rising Sun Athletes in the All-Ireland Masters at Nenagh. Brendan Dennehy won gold in the 60m, high and long jumps O/55. Con Donovan won gold in the 60m, 200m and long jump, plus silver in the 400m O/60. Jim Murray won gold in the 200m and 400m, plus silver in the 800m and high jump O/55. John Leahy won bronze in the 400m O/45. John O'Riordan won silver in the 400m and 800m O/50

Rising Sun won the cup for the top club at the Munster Masters T&F championships in May. Recently we were awarded the General O'Duffy Cup for finishing top T&F club in Cork. This trophy covers Junior,Senior and Masters. We also won 15 gold and many silver and bronze medals at the National Masters T&F championships. Also well done to George Webb on winning the County and Munster titles at St.Finbarrs half marathon.

On May 5th Rising Sun Promoted a one mile Road Race at 8 p.m. at Lisfihill Road, Balllinhassig, Co Cork. The race was held on a straight stretch of road into a westerly wind with a slightly favourable fall of ground. Rising Sun wishes to thank all those who took part and those who gave considerable donations towards the race. A total 420 Euro was collected. The complete amount will be donated to the pre-school run by Ms. Ann Coughlan in Enable Ireland. The race was won by Billy O'Flaherty, Skibbereen AC in a time of 4:30. For the second year running Ann-Marie Healy, Eagle AC won the Ladies Race. Her time was 5:39.

Paddy Desmond Memorial 5Km Road Race held on March 17th.

There was a turnout of 80 runners for the first staging of this race. The course was over an undulating fast circuit. The mens race was won comfortably by Ciaran O'Lionaird Leevale in a time of 15:40 while the Ladies race was won by Margo Dinan St. FInbarrs in a time of 18:56. Jerry Forde was the winner of the wheelchair event in a time of 26:13.
